Looked up a video on how to stop a toilet from randomly running and ended up making things worse than when I started. The toilet in my apartment refills by itself every few minutes even when nobody's used it — it's like it briefly kicks on, runs for 10–15 seconds, then goes quiet again before starting the cycle all over. The landlord is slow to respond, so I figured I'd try to sort it out myself.

Followed a tutorial that said to adjust the float by bending the arm, but this toilet has a newer-style fill valve, not the old ballcock type, and now I'm not sure I adjusted the right thing. Found out the hard way that a too-long toilet chain is apparently a thing when my toilet started running nonstop a few days after we moved in. Tried clipping the chain to a higher hook on the flush arm, re-hooking it at a shorter link, and even replacing the whole flapper assembly thinking that was the problem — still getting either a phantom flush every hour or a flapper that barely lifts when I flush. I've double-checked that the chain isn't kinked or tangled, and the flapper itself seats flat on the valve seat, but I can't seem to dial in the right length. Found something strange happening with my toilet — after every flush, the tank seems to refill okay, but then I notice the water level in the bowl is slowly dropping, like the tank is quietly leaking into it. Or maybe it's the other way around? I honestly can't tell. I'm retired and I've owned this house for a while now, but I've always just called someone for plumbing stuff and never really learned it myself.

Found myself staring at a toilet that won't stop cycling on and off after all that heavy rain we had last week — the tank fills up, I hear it click off, and then a few minutes later it kicks back on again like it's topping itself up. Nobody ever told me how many weird sounds a toilet could make — I just assumed they flushed and that was it. But ours has started making this soft, almost constant hissing noise after every flush, and it seems to go on for a while before it finally stops. During a walkthrough of my new place, I noticed the toilet tank seemed to be filling way higher than I remembered at my old house — nearly to the top of the overflow tube. At my last home I ended up adjusting something on a float ball and it fixed the problem right away, but this toilet has a totally different setup inside the tank with a vertical fill valve that I don't recognize at all.

I want to get the water level set correctly so it flushes properly without wasting water or running constantly. Found that my toilet tank starts making a constant trickling sound whenever the temperature outside climbs above about 85°F — during cooler months it works perfectly fine. I popped the lid off the tank and it looks like the fill valve is the culprit, maybe warped or worn from the heat cycling, because water just keeps creeping past it. The toilet is about eight or nine years old, two-piece, standard builder-grade setup.
