Looked under the sink and found an old bottle of Drano sitting there, and I'm wondering if I can just pour it into the toilet bowl to clear the slow drain. My toilet is probably 20+ years old and starting to drain sluggishly after flushing — not completely blocked, but definitely not moving like it should. During a conversation with a plumber who came out for a running toilet, he mentioned I'd need to shut off the main water supply to the house before doing anything. That seemed extreme to me — I've seen what looks like a small valve right behind the toilet near the floor, and I always assumed that was specifically for shutting off just the toilet without cutting water to the whole house. Am I wrong about that?

I'm trying to handle some of the simpler repairs myself now that I own this place, and I'd really like to understand how that little valve works and whether it's actually safe to rely on. My vacation property came with a toilet seat that was clearly never maintained properly by the previous owner — it wobbles side to side every time anyone sits on it, and the hinge bolts underneath seem to work themselves loose within days of me tightening them. I noticed it during my first walkthrough after closing and assumed it would be a simple fix, but no matter how snug I get those bolts, the seat starts rocking again within a week or two.

I'm only at the property a few times a year, so I can't keep running back to retighten everything. Is there something structurally wrong with the hinges, or am I missing something about how these are supposed to be secured? Looked down at the toilet this morning and the flush handle is either jammed solid or flopping around like it's barely attached — and of course we're hosting a big family get-together this weekend. It's a standard gravity-flush toilet, probably 10 or 15 years old, nothing fancy. The handle used to feel perfectly normal, and now it either won't depress at all or pushes down with zero resistance and nothing happens.
